What are the top Supply Chain Management challenges?

Image
Effective supply chain management is a critical factor in business success, yet organizations often face challenges that can disrupt operations and profitability. Among these, cost management stands out as a key concern. However, strategic cost management is not merely about cutting costs—it is about achieving a sustainable cost advantage while maintaining quality, fostering strong supplier relationships, and ensuring long-term supply chain stability. Why Cost Analysis Matters in Procurement While price analysis provides a foundational view of supplier pricing, cost analysis takes a deeper approach, offering invaluable insights—especially when the product or service being evaluated is not standardized. When businesses customize products and services to their specific needs, additional costs arise beyond industry-standard solutions. In cases where no industry standard or market benchmarks exist, cost analysis becomes essential to determining a reasonable price. Cost analysis enables pro...

Image
Hey everyone, I just got a job as a strategic sourcing analyst at a major medical group that’s rapidly expanding throughout the country. The main goal of my role depends on driving costs savings. The problem is I do not have a lot of negotiation experience and I know next to nothing about my category, lab equipment — hardware and software.  Question: Does anyone have any cost benchmark resources or negotiation tips to share?  AIMDRIVE-AI Solution:  A structured approach to negotiations can help ensure cost savings and prevent unjustified price increases. How Do You Negotiate with Suppliers in Procurement?

Image
Negotiating with suppliers in procurement requires a strategic and data-driven approach. A well-informed buyer can leverage key analytical tools to ensure fair pricing, cost optimization, and long-term supplier relationships. The two most critical components in effective supplier negotiations are price analysis and cost analysis . Price Analysis: Ensuring Market-Competitive Pricing Price analysis involves comparing market prices for similar products and tracking trends to determine whether a quoted price is reasonable. This approach allows procurement professionals to assess if they are overpaying compared to industry benchmarks. By analyzing past trends, market fluctuations, and competitor pricing, buyers can negotiate with confidence, ensuring that they secure the best possible terms. Cost Analysis: Identifying Cost-Saving Opportunities Cost analysis goes deeper than just comparing prices; it involves breaking down the cost structure of a product or service. This breakdown inclu...

What Tools Do You Use to Do Market Research?

Hi everyone! I’ve been in procurement for around five years, but in all my previous roles, the contract setup and contract management teams have been separate, and I’ve always done contract management. How to negotiate materials contracts

Image
Hey all, quick background on myself. I work for my family business; we are an OEM manufacturer of custom upholstery. I get my training from college and certifications like CPIM, so I have no higher-ups to learn from. I’m self-taught and have implemented everything from reorder points to ABC classifications myself. Right now, my next focus is helping the company save on material costs by looking into vendor contracts. We have two high-volume material groups—plastic and vinyl. The type of plastic we order and the quantities stay consistent throughout the year, but vinyl does not. Our customers let their customers pick and choose whatever vinyl colors they want from various vinyl manufacturers we purchase from—there are thousands of color options. We don’t keep stock of much vinyl because we never know what our customers will pick. It’s very lean, made-to-order. There are around five options we do keep in stock, and we use a decent amount of those few each quarter, so it makes sense to ha...

Do you prioritize overall value or push vendors hard for savings?

Cost savings is the goal for every procurement professional, but how do we go about it is also equally important. I always get told by my managers that you should always “break the vendor” and squeeze every bit of currency out of them. At my organization if a buyer gets a discount of 8%, that is seen as being “too nice” towards the vendor unless the savings is 17% and above. So how is procurement generally practiced at your organization? Question: Do you strive for an overall value even if the savings is not significant enough, or do you hammer the vendor/suppliers to the point they give up? AIMDRIVE-AI Solution: Effective procurement is about more than just aggressive cost-cutting — it’s about strategic sourcing and maintaining strong supplier relationships in order to have suppliers help you achieve better-than-average cost efficiency. While price reduction is important, pressuring suppliers too much can lead to quality issues, supply disruptions and distrust. Instead, a more sus...

What procurement strategy?

I’ve just taken on the role of an industrial buyer in an SME that produces small to medium-sized batches of products for large industrial clients. My portfolio mainly consists of primary raw materials like steel, as well as laser cutting, oxycutting, machining, fasteners, and subcontracted operations. Currently, there is no structured purchasing strategy — projects are assigned to suppliers without clear criteria such as price or volume. Additionally, the ERP system is poorly maintained, making it difficult to access historical data. Question:  What would be the best course of action to establish an effective procurement strategy? AIMDRIVE-AI Solution: Given the lack of a structured purchasing strategy, the first step is to establish a process that ensures cost control, supplier selection, and risk management while maintaining quality and timely delivery. To achieve this, engage in the following analysis to ensure purchasing decisions are competitive: 1.  Price Analysis: ...
